Workforce Readiness: Addressing Talent Shortages Through HR Leadership

Talent shortages continue to challenge organizations across Eastern Iowa, impacting recruitment, retention, productivity, and organizational growth. For HR professionals, workforce readiness has become a strategic priority—not just an HR initiative.

Nationally, employers are increasingly addressing talent shortages through education and development strategies. Approximately 47% of U.S. employers offer tuition reimbursement or educational assistance benefits to support employee skill development.¹ In addition, many organizations are expanding on-the-job training and experience-based hiring, recognizing that skills can be developed internally rather than sourced fully formed.²

Earn-and-learn programs, including registered apprenticeships and structured training pathways, continue to grow across industries, allowing individuals to gain paid experience while building long-term career skills. Employer partnerships with colleges and universities are also becoming more common, helping align academic programs with real-world workforce needs and strengthen regional talent pipelines.³

Eastern Iowa SHRM supports HR professionals in exploring these strategies and sharing best practices that help address workforce challenges locally. Through collaboration, innovation, and intentional workforce development, HR leaders can transform today’s talent shortages into opportunities for sustainable growth and organizational success.
